Jim McCarthy

Founder & Chairman
McCarthy Hatch

Jim McCarthy is Chairman of McCarthy Hatch, a tech-enabled consulting and analytics firm that helps state regulators and supervised entities convert consumer complaints and market sentiment into actionable supervision and enforcement intelligence. A former founding member of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, McCarthy designed and built the CFPB’s consumer complaint system and helped establish the operational playbook for using complaint data to identify emerging harm, prioritize examinations, and support enforcement decisions. He personally onboarded thousands of financial institutions and consumer finance companies into the CFPB portal—work that required detailed review of how companies actually receive, categorize, investigate, and resolve complaints in practice. Earlier in his career, McCarthy served at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) during the financial crisis, leading efforts to resolve failed institutions and protect depositors through the orderly transfer of deposits at scale. He later advised major institutions on regulatory risk and compliance, including serving as a Senior Managing Director at KPMG, where he helped organizations manage complex, high-stakes regulatory and operational risk across banking and fintech ecosystems. Today, McCarthy Hatch is known for complaint and sentiment analytics that bring regulator-grade clarity to what is happening in the market now—not quarters later. McCarthy is widely recognized for bridging the gap between policy intent and marketplace reality—translating consumer narratives into clear harm, root cause, and legal exposure across payments, deposits, credit, servicing, and third-party relationships. He advises senior leaders on building complaint programs that withstand scrutiny, deploying analytics to spot issues earlier, and aligning corrective action to the specific consumer harm regulators care about most.
